I love these cheap collections of previously released music! This one has the advantage of giving you, in addition to Holst's most popular work, what appears to be his second most popular (or at least second most frequently recorded), the folksy ST. PAUL'S SUITE for string orchestra, before returning to PLANETary moods and timbres in the ballet for THE PERFECT FOOL.(In this last, spirits of the earth, water, and fire dance-- not air, as it says once in the liner notes.) There are also no extraneous heavenly bodies here, trailing behind those in Holst's already full sky-- an all-too-common practice these days-- although some might object to ANYTHING following "Neptune's" fade-out, as the other works on this CD do.(Simon Rattle, Philharmonia Orchestra, Ambrosian Singers, 1981 [THE PLANETS]; Yehudi Menuhin, English Chamber Orchestra, 1994 [ST. PAUL'S SUITE, THE PERFECT FOOL])
